Cutting Stories. Framing Moments.

Benymon Dono

Hello people of the internet and world, My name is Kalina Benymon. I am a 21 year old woman that's a senior in college. My hobbies are Nintendo, dogs, and computers. I have loving parents and an awesome brother, who is the reason I love videogames to this day. My favorite videogame is the game called Okami. Okami is a Japanese style game with an amazing story and artwork that has changed my life for the better. Editing videos and photography has been my passion since I was 10 editing funny videos on my mom's computer. Ever since then I knew what I wanted to do, and that's filming and editing. Let's create new bonds together. "When one tries to master something, it ends in either success or failure. But it is in the attempt itself where you find the true value. Believe in your own power and walk your own path." -Oki (from Okami)

Bowser Strikes Back Poster

Kalina designed this bold, action-packed promotional graphic featuring Nintendo's iconic villain, Bowser. With a dramatic red-to-black gradient background and a powerful 3D render of Bowser, the composition instantly captures attention and sets an intense, villainous tone.

The Community Plug

For this project I interviewed the founders the Community Plug, Nishelle Smith and Ashanti Smith. The Community Plug is a non-profit that helps with students and or new moms with education, baby showers, and mental health help. The non-profit holds events about once or twice a year and will soon expand outside of Memphis. The Community Plug was founded in 2022. Just this year, they held a Imagine Me College and Career Fair. This fair was about giving college students and opportunity to study without having to worry about tuition or time constraints. The non-profit also focuses on helping out mothers that either can’t afford help or have no for of childcare. They believe in the phrase of, “It takes a village.” Being a first-time parent can be a challenge and, in some cases, very mentally straining. They do this so mothers don’t feel overwhelmed or alone taking care of there child. Many people do not have an opportunity to go school especially if you have children or didn’t have the funds to get into college. They are and official non-profit and have been approved since early 2022. They can be found on both Facebook and their website, the Community Plug.com.

Buff City Soap

The “hidden gem in my city” is that of Buff City Soap. Buff City Soap originated in Memphis and has had a steady flow of customers, both outside of Memphis and locally. Overtime, the store has created over thousands of different types of soap with different types of scents. Buff city soap does not just sell soap, they also sell liquid soap, bath bombs, laundry detergent, candles, and many more. Those that were interviewed were both the lead in hand soap making, Savannah, and the lead in liquid soap making, Amarise. The soap making process does not involved a fridge or a heater. The base of the soap that is used is oil, then the powder and fragrance is poured in then blended up. Depending on the type of soap, the soap bases can be from one to three buckets. Once all the colors are blended they are all poured into a mold and left to sit until it is solid so it can be cut and ready to sell to the public. The liquid soap Amarise makes also uses oil to make the foam liquid soap. Once the fragrance is poured in, she blends it, then slowly pours the mixture in the container and put it on the shelf to sell.

The Slit-Mountation Woman

This story is about the Kuchisake-onna or slit mouthed woman. The Slit mouthed woman is a malicious spirit or what is called an onryō of a woman that was killed or executed and was never laid to rest. The story begins with a beautiful woman. She was the most beautiful woman in the town, and everyone admired her and wanted her for her beauty. The woman’s biggest admirer tries to ask her out. The woman refuses and the guy gets mad.Angry because he was rejected, he takes a pair of shears or scissors and cuts her mouth open reaching all the way to her eyes, killing her. Days later the man comes back and the same woman that killed her taps him on the shoulder and says the words, “Am I beautiful?”The man does not have time to answer, and the woman kills him using the same shears she was killed with. When the man was found the next morning, the woman was gone and the man’s mouth was slit all the way up to his eyes, making it look like a demented smile. The only way to escape the Slit mouth woman’s wrath is to answer her question with another question or give her a vague answer.
